Dental hygienE

Most patients think that dentists are only interested in teeth. However, it has long been understood by the profession that healthy teeth are only useful if supported by healthy gums. Gum disease causes more loss of teeth in adults than decay.

Airflow and Guided Biofilm Therapy - GBT

GBT is done during regular cleanings and uses AirFlow technology to remove all bacteria (biofilm) in the mouth that contribute to tooth decay and gum disease.

GBT is an evidence-based dental hygiene treatment protocol proven to effective management of dental biofilm and hard deposits from the oral cavity. To do this we have invested in the AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master which is state of the art equipment developed in Switzerland.

Dental biofilm is the main etiologic factor for caries, periodontal and peri-implant infections. Periodontitis can increase the risk of systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular and respiratory disease, arthritis, or diabetes.

Guided Biofilm Therapy consists of treatment protocols based on individual patient diagnosis and risk assessment to achieve optimal results. The treatment is given in the least invasive way, with the highest level of comfort, safety, and efficiency.

Why visit the hygienist?

Gum disease is a very common condition in which your gums can become swollen, sore or infected causing pain and discomfort.

If you have gum disease, your gums may bleed when you brush your teeth and it may cause you to have bad breath. This early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis.

If gingivitis is not treated, a condition called periodontitis can develop. This affects the tissues that support teeth and hold them in place.

If periodontitis is not treated, the bone in your jaw may be damaged and small spaces can open up between the gum and teeth. Your teeth can become loose and may eventually fall out.

Good oral hygiene is one of the most effective ways of preventing long term dental problems. Cleaning your teeth twice a day and using the correct techniques prevents tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath, it also stops more serious problems such as tooth loss and premature ageing from the resulting bone loss in the jaw.

With regular check-ups and visits to see our dental hygienist we are able to identify any problems and help you in practicing good oral hygiene.

If you have any concerns relating to gum problems please contact the practice to speak to one of our dental professionals.

We are delighted to have the services of a dental hygienist who will advise on correct brushing techniques, as well as being able to provide a range of other services. See also bdhf.org and follow the links to gum disease, or periodontal disease.
