Carola’s Story: A Smile Transformed Through Careful Planning and Modern Dentistry

At Ferndale House Dental Practice, every patient journey is personal, and Carola’s story is a beautiful reminder of the impact a confident smile can have.

After years of focusing on her family and raising two sons, Carola decided it was time to invest in herself. For years, she had felt self-conscious about her smile, particularly due to the dark amalgam fillings that were visible when she laughed or spoke. It affected her confidence more than most people realised. Finally ready to make a change, she booked a consultation with our principal dentist, Dr Leo Duran.

A Thorough and Personalised Consultation

Carola’s journey began with an in-depth consultation. This wasn’t just a quick check-up—it was a comprehensive clinical assessment designed to fully understand her oral health, aesthetic goals, and personal concerns.

Dr Duran took the time to listen to Carola’s story. She explained the specific things she didn’t like about her smile and what she hoped to achieve. From there, a full examination was carried out, which included:

  • Digital X-rays: These give us a detailed view beneath the surface, allowing us to check the health of the roots, bone levels, and any hidden decay or existing restorations that might need attention.
  • Intraoral and extraoral photographs: These are incredibly helpful for both diagnosis and treatment planning. They allow us to visually document the patient’s current smile, tooth position, shape, colour and gum symmetry. For the patient, they provide a clear “before and after” reference, helping them understand what’s possible and track progress.
  • Digital scans: Using advanced intraoral scanning technology, we captured a precise 3D model of Carola’s teeth and bite. Unlike traditional impressions (which can be uncomfortable), digital scans are quick, clean, and incredibly accurate. They allow us to plan treatments with greater precision and visualise results using digital simulations, giving the patient a clearer idea of the proposed changes.

This stage is essential for aligning the patient’s goals with the clinical possibilities. Dr Duran used this data to design a fully bespoke treatment plan tailored to Carola’s smile and expectations.

Replacing Amalgam Fillings: Functional and Cosmetic Benefits

One of the first concerns Carola raised was the appearance of her dark amalgam (silver) fillings. While amalgam is a durable material that has been used for decades in dentistry, it’s not without its downsides—particularly when it comes to aesthetics.

  • Appearance: Amalgam fillings are dark and highly visible, especially when placed in teeth that show when smiling or speaking.
  • Metal expansion: Over time, amalgam can expand and contract with temperature changes in the mouth, which may contribute to micro-fractures in the surrounding tooth structure.
  • Mercury content: Amalgam contains a small amount of mercury, which, although considered safe by health authorities in dental use, has led some patients to opt for mercury-free alternatives.

In contrast, tooth-coloured composite fillings offer many benefits:

  • Natural appearance: They blend seamlessly with the surrounding tooth, making them virtually invisible.
  • Bonded to the tooth: Composite resin adheres directly to the enamel, which helps strengthen the remaining tooth structure.
  • No metal: They’re completely metal-free and mercury-free.
  • Preserve more natural tooth: Less tooth needs to be removed during placement, preserving more of your natural enamel.

For Carola, replacing her old amalgam fillings with these modern, tooth-coloured alternatives made an immediate difference—not just aesthetically, but psychologically. She no longer worried about how her teeth looked when she smiled.

A Comprehensive Smile Enhancement: Veneers and Composite Bonding

Once her fillings were replaced, the next phase of Carola’s treatment focused on the overall appearance of her smile. This stage was completed in two parts:

  1. Porcelain Veneers: Custom-crafted veneers were placed on her upper front teeth to enhance shape, alignment, and brightness. Veneers are thin porcelain shells bonded to the front of the teeth, providing a natural-looking, durable, and beautifully uniform finish. They are ideal for correcting minor imperfections, discolouration, or unevenness.
  2. Composite Bonding: For the adjacent teeth, composite bonding was used to refine shape and symmetry. This minimally invasive procedure involves the careful layering of tooth-coloured resin to improve size, shape, and contour. Bonding is often used alongside veneers to create a balanced, harmonious smile.

A Confidence That Shines

When Carola saw her final result, she was absolutely delighted. The transformation was more than just physical—it was emotional. She shared with us that she now feels a renewed sense of confidence, something she hadn’t felt in years.

It’s stories like Carola’s that remind us of the powerful connection between oral health, aesthetics, and overall well being. A beautiful smile isn’t just about how it looks—it’s about how it makes you feel.
